Northeaster
Winslow Homer, 1895
Wave meets rock and loses the argument for a second. Spray climbs. Maine weather with teeth. He stayed for the crash.
About this work
Northeaster is a seascape by Winslow Homer, painted in 1895 and reworked by 1901, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are no people and no boats: only dark rocks in the foreground and a wave exploding into white spray against them, with heavy green water and a grey sky behind. A northeaster is a storm on the upper East Coast of the United States, named for the direction from which its wind drives onto land. Homer, largely self-taught and a former magazine illustrator, settled at Prouts Neck, Maine, in 1883, in a studio about seventy-five feet from the ocean. There he turned more and more to the sea itself, especially in storms, in pictures such as Cannon Rock, painted the same year, The Gulf Stream and Early Morning After a Storm at Sea. These paintings of the battle line between sea and shore have been called "among the strongest expressions in all art of the power and dangerous beauty of the sea." Northeaster went to the dealer M. Knoedler and Company in 1895 and to the collector Thomas B. Clarke, then back to Homer in Maine; he reworked it before George A. Hearn bought it in 1901. Hearn gave it to the Met in 1910. The canvas measures 34 1/2 by 50 inches.

The file is 3,811 × 2,613 px. Medium (24 × 16 in) is the largest size that prints at 150 ppi or more (159 ppi), the sharpest choice for close viewing; Large (36 × 25 in) prints at 105 ppi, fine from a few feet away but softer up close.
Is it legal to print Northeaster?
Yes. Northeaster is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
