The Fog Warning by Winslow Homer — large framed print

The Fog Warning

Winslow Homer, 1885

Sailing

He looks back and the fog is already a wall. The moment you know you stayed out too long. The catch is heavy. The shore is a guess.

About this work

The Fog Warning is one of three paintings of local fishermen that Winslow Homer completed in 1885 at Prouts Neck, Maine, where he had settled after a stay in 1881–82 at Cullercoats, in northeast England, and where his new studio was finished in 1884. The others are Lost on the Grand Banks and The Herring Net, and together they are counted among his best works on the hard lives of fishermen. It was first exhibited as Halibut Fishing. A lone fisherman in a dory has caught several halibut, but as he rows back toward his ship he looks over his shoulder at a bank of fog blowing up, threatening to cut him off. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which owns the painting, describes it as a narrative picture whose tale is "disturbing rather than charming": the fisherman has been successful, but the hardest task of the day, the return to the main ship, is still ahead of him. Many of Homer's late paintings, like this one, show a single figure at sea.

Yes. The Fog Warning is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
