Joaquín Sorolla, 1909

Beach

White dresses. Bare feet. The Mediterranean at noon. A mother and daughter walk where the wet sand shines. The wind is soft. Summer has nowhere else to be.

About this work

Strolling along the Seashore (Paseo a orillas del mar) is a 1909 painting by the Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla, now in the Museo Sorolla in Madrid. It shows his wife, Clotilde García del Castillo, holding a parasol, walking with their eldest daughter, María, on the beach at Valencia while the sea breeze lifts their white dresses. Sorolla painted it in the summer of 1909, just after his exhibition at the Hispanic Society of America in New York, where 195 of the 356 paintings shown were sold. It is often grouped with Spanish Impressionism, but Spanish sources place it in Valencian Luminism, a style that aims to catch a single instant of light. Sorolla deliberately cuts off the top of Clotilde's hat at the edge of the canvas and gives the lower half of the picture to the shining wet sand. Born in Valencia in 1863, Sorolla married Clotilde in 1888; María was born in 1890. The painting, about 205 by 200 cm, has stayed in the painter's Madrid house since 1911. After his death his widow left many of his works to the Spanish public, and the house opened as the Museo Sorolla in 1932.
