Winslow Homer, 1870
Three women wade at high tide. Skirts wet. Rocks dark. New England summer that still feels cool in the ankles.
About this work
Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts (High Tide) is an 1870 oil by Winslow Homer in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On a bright beach on the North Shore of Massachusetts, three young women come out of the water after bathing: one bends to wring out her long hair, one sits on the sand, and one stands in a dark bathing dress looking out to sea, while a small black dog stands at the water's edge. The picture looks harmless now, but it caused a stir. Shown at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1870, it was called unique and defiant, "not quite refined" and "of questionable taste," because of its subject, wet women with loose hair and bare legs, and the sense that the viewer is watching them. Homer was still working as a magazine illustrator for publications such as Harper's Weekly, and through the 1870s critics praised his daring but frequently attacked his loose, unconventional handling. The Met also owns a study for the painting, probably from 1869. The finished canvas measures 26 by 38 inches and was given to the museum by Mrs. William F. Milton in 1923.
