A Dutch Ferry Boat before a Breeze
Simon de Vlieger, late 1640s
Simon de Vlieger painted shipping off the Dutch coast on a blustery day in the late 1640s. A kaag, or ferry boat, with a red sail carries passengers toward the distant shore, flying the Dutch flag at the mainmast. The painting is in Royal Museums Greenwich.
