Claude Monet, 1867
Flags snap. Boats lean. His father sits on the sand at Sainte-Adresse. The Channel is work and holiday in the same wind.
About this work
The Beach at Sainte-Adresse is an 1867 oil by Claude Monet in the Art Institute of Chicago. Dark-sailed fishing boats drift offshore under a grey, cloud-filled sky, while fishermen, their gear and beached boats fill the shingle in the foreground. Between the boats sit two small figures, a man in a dark suit looking through a telescope and a woman in a straw hat with a scarlet ribbon. Monet, who grew up in the area, spent the summer of 1867 with his aunt at Sainte-Adresse, a well-to-do suburb of the port of Le Havre. The museum notes that the spreading railway was turning the old fishing village into a seaside resort, and the fashionable couple, clearly tourists, makes this a picture of modern life, one of Monet's first treatments of tourism. He began it outdoors and finished it in the studio. Conservation research shows he first included more tourists and yachts, then painted them out to concentrate on the fishermen. The canvas is a companion to Regatta at Sainte-Adresse in the Metropolitan Museum, painted from almost the same spot. Monet chose to show this one at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876, nearly ten years after he painted it. It came to Chicago in 1933 with the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Larned Coburn Memorial Collection.
