The Battle of Navarino, 20 October 1827
Thomas Luny, 1828
The allied fleets destroy the Ottoman–Egyptian navy at Navarino — the last great battle of the age of sail.
About this work
The Battle of Navarino, 20 October 1827 is an 1828 oil by Thomas Luny in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. It shows the last major naval battle fought entirely with sailing ships. During the Greek War of Independence, British, French and Russian squadrons under Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Codrington entered Navarino Bay on the west coast of the Peloponnese, where the Ottoman and Egyptian fleet lay at anchor. In four hours of fighting the Ottoman fleet was virtually destroyed without the loss of a single Allied ship, which made Greek independence far more likely. The museum describes the scene. In the foreground an Egyptian boat full of gesturing figures is surrounded by men in the water and a floating broken mast. Beyond it, Codrington's flagship Asia, 82 guns, is in close action with the flagship of the Egyptian admiral, while on the left the Turkish admiral's flagship burns, shattered. Smoke fills the bay. Luny signed it on a floating spar at far left, "T Luny 1828." Luny, born in Cornwall in 1759 and trained in London under the marine painter Francis Holman, worked from 1807 in Teignmouth, Devon. He probably based this picture on a lithograph after George Philip Reinagle, who witnessed the battle.
