Yachts of the Cumberland Society Racing on the Thames
William Havell, c. 1815
Organized yacht racing began on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The Duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775, the ancestor of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. William Havell painted its yachts racing around 1815, and the canvas is in Royal Museums Greenwich.
