Ships off Dover
Francis Holman, 18th century
Francis Holman painted shipping in the Downs in calm seas, with a British squadron under sail and other ships at anchor. The Downs was an anchorage off the south-east coast of England in the days of sail. The white cliffs, and perhaps Dover, show in the distance. The painting is in Royal Museums Greenwich.
