Abraham Storck painted three Dutch whalers in the polar sea among walruses and ice floes. Their crews hunt whales while fending off polar bears. Whale oil was then in great demand in Europe for candles, lubricants, lamp oil and soap. The painting is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
