Van Gogh painted sunflowers in Arles in 1888 and 1889, and the National Gallery's Sunflowers and the Vase with Twelve Sunflowers open this page, with the Irises and the Almond Blossom of 1890, painted for his newborn nephew, his Orchard in Blossom and a poppy field. Gauguin's portrait of Van Gogh painting sunflowers (1888) hangs beside them.
Monet's flowers run from the Garden at Sainte-Adresse (1867) and Wild Poppies near Argenteuil (1873) to the Water-Lily Pond of 1899 and the water lilies he painted at Giverny until his death in 1926. Klimt's Poppy Field, The Sunflower and Farm Garden with Sunflowers date from 1906 to 1908, and Hiroshige's Plum Garden at Kameido (1857) is the print Van Gogh copied in oils.
The botanical plates are Pierre-Joseph Redouté's roses from Les Roses (1817–24) and two flowers from Robert Thornton's Temple of Flora. Each is printed at its true shape, nothing cropped or stretched, and arrives framed and ready to hang.
25 works in this collection, dated 1800 to 1926. Most represented: Vincent van Gogh (6), Claude Monet (5), and Gustav Klimt (3). Sources include Cleveland Museum of Art.
