Vasily Perov painted Fyodor Dostoevsky in 1872, commissioned by the collector Pavel Tretyakov for his gallery of Russian cultural figures. Dostoevsky was then writing Demons, having already published Crime and Punishment and The Idiot. The painting is in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
