Vincent van Gogh, 1890
Van Gogh painted this bouquet of irises in May 1890, just before leaving the asylum at Saint-Rémy. The purple flowers were set against a pink background that has since faded to near white. The painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
