Kronborg Castle with Shipping
Carl Bille, c. 1860
Elsinore’s Kronborg still commanding the Øresund — intact Renaissance fortress with warships in the roads.
About this work
This seascape by the Danish marine painter Carl Bille shows ships passing Kronborg Castle at Helsingør. A three-masted ship with auxiliary steam, smoke trailing from its funnel, runs through choppy green water, with other sailing ships behind and a small pilot boat with a red sail close by; the long low silhouette of Kronborg and its spires lies on the horizon at right. The painting is signed and dated "Carl Bille 1873" at lower left, and its Danish title translates as Seascape off Kronborg with numerous ships and a pilot boat. It was sold at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen in 2000. Kronborg stands at the narrowest point of the Øresund, where the sound is only four kilometres wide, and controlled one of the few outlets of the Baltic. King Frederick II rebuilt the medieval fortress as a Renaissance castle in 1574–85. Shakespeare made it famous as Elsinore in Hamlet, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bille, born in Copenhagen in 1815, trained as a sailmaker and spent many years at sea. Only after his marriage in 1846 did he give up sailing to paint, exhibiting his first picture in 1854 and studying perspective with the marine painter Carl Dahl. Many of his small pictures of Danish waters were sold to neighbouring countries and England.

Yes. Kronborg Castle with Shipping is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
