Franz Hinterholzer, c. 1880
Another Salzburg approach to the Festung — full curtain walls and towers without ruin romance.
About this work
View of Hohensalzburg Fortress (Blick auf die Festung Hohensalzburg) is an oil on cardboard by the Salzburg painter Franz Hinterholzer, about 32.5 by 48 cm and signed "F. Hinterholzer" at lower right. Seen from the west, from the Mönchsberg side, the white walls and towers of the fortress crown a wooded hill above the town's rooftops, with tall trees framing the right side and a summer sky of drifting clouds. Hohensalzburg sits on the Festungsberg at 506 metres. It was begun in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy and expanded by later prince-archbishops; at 250 by 150 metres it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Hinterholzer was born in Salzburg in 1851 and died there in 1928. Despite a chronic eye condition he studied at the Munich Academy from 1868, travelled in Germany, Italy and France, and in 1886 opened a private painting school in Salzburg. He exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast and the Vienna Künstlerhaus, wrote articles criticising the destruction of the countryside around the city, and in 1905 became court painter and drawing teacher to the Habsburg-Tuscany family. By the end of the First World War he was blind. A quay in Salzburg, the Franz-Hinterholzer-Kai, is named after him.
