About this work
Windsor Castle at Sunset is an oil on canvas by the British landscape painter Alfred de Bréanski, signed at lower right. The castle's long walls and central tower sit on the skyline in the last light, above dark trees, and the river in the foreground reflects the pale evening sky. The painting, 64 by 90 cm, was sold at Bonhams in Knightsbridge, London, on 25 October 2016. Windsor Castle was first built in the eleventh century, after William the Conqueror's invasion of England. It has been used by the monarch since the reign of Henry I and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe and the largest inhabited castle in the world, still a working royal home. Bréanski (1852–1928) is best known for his "Constablesque" landscapes of England, Scotland and Wales. Some of his works were shown at the Royal Academy, and British public collections, including Southampton, Glasgow, Sheffield and Bournemouth, hold dozens of his paintings. His brother Gustave de Bréanski and his son Alfred de Bréanski Jr. were also painters, which is why catalogues often call him Alfred de Bréanski Senior.
