View of Schroon Mountain, Essex County, New York, After a Storm
Thomas Cole, 1838
A mountain after rain, New York wilderness still standing. A peak loved the way other men loved a cathedral. The storm has passed. The sermon has not.
About this work
Thomas Cole painted View of Schroon Mountain, Essex County, New York, After a Storm in 1838. The peak Cole called Schroon Mountain is officially named Hoffman Mountain, in the Adirondacks. Cole sketched the scene in early summer, but in his studio he painted it in a dramatic blaze of autumn colour, with storm clouds clearing from the summit. The choice probably had nationalist overtones: he once declared that autumn was the "one season where the American forest surpasses all the world in gorgeousness". Two years earlier, in his Essay on American Scenery, he had written, "We are still in Eden." Cole also included two Indigenous men in the foliage at the lower right. At the time the Adirondacks were still home to Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples, long after most Native Americans had been forcibly removed from lands east of the Mississippi, and they were adapting to growing white settlement and the lumber, mining and tourist industries. The first owner was Cole's brother-in-law, Dr George Ackerly. The canvas measures 99.8 × 160.6 cm and is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection.
