About this work

Giovanni Paolo Panini painted this view of the Interior of the Pantheon in Rome around 1734. In his day, as now, the Pantheon was one of the great sights of the city. The temple was built under the emperor Hadrian and probably dedicated around AD 126, on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa. It survived intact because it was consecrated as a church in AD 609. Its coffered dome of Roman concrete is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, and the height to the central opening, the oculus, equals the diameter of the interior, 43 metres. Panini fills the rotunda with tourists, clergy and Romans of every class who come to pray, talk and admire the building. He stretches the perspective, enlarging the dome and oculus, to show more of the interior than could be seen from any one point. Panini (1691–1765) was the leading painter of views of Rome and of its antiquities; he painted the Pantheon many times, varying the crowd in each version. It was the first non-Renaissance Italian painting bought by Samuel H. Kress, in 1927, and he gave it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1939.
