The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis
Rembrandt, 1661–62
Rembrandt painted the Batavian leader Claudius Civilis swearing his people to revolt against Rome in 1661 and 1662. The canvas was made for the new town hall of Amsterdam, but it was returned and Rembrandt cut it down. The surviving part is in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
