About this work

Jacques-Louis David's The Intervention of the Sabine Women, completed in 1799, shows a legendary episode after the abduction of the Sabine women by the founders of Rome. Hersilia, wife of Romulus and daughter of the Sabine leader Titus Tatius, throws herself between her husband and her father and puts her babies between them; Romulus, spear raised, hesitates. Behind them rises the Tarpeian Rock, from which Roman traitors were thrown, and the towering walls have been read as an allusion to the Bastille. David began planning the picture while imprisoned in the Luxembourg Palace in 1795, as a supporter of Robespierre after the Terror. Work on the canvas began in 1796, after his estranged wife visited him in jail, and its theme of love prevailing over conflict was also taken as a plea for the French to reunite after the bloodshed of the Revolution. He worked on it for nearly four years, partly in a temporary studio in the Louvre, and blended the faces of aristocratic models with those of classical sculpture. The painting is in the Louvre.
