An orange sun over a gray harbor. Boats as brushmarks. Mist does half the painting. Morning before the day finds its edges.

About this work

Impression, Sunrise shows the port of Le Havre, Claude Monet's hometown, at dawn: an orange sun and its reflection over grey-blue water, with small boats and the shapes of the harbour dissolved in mist. Monet painted it in 1872 as one of a group of views of the port. In 2014 the astronomer Donald Olson and colleagues used the sun's position, tide tables, weather records and the direction of the smoke in the picture to date it to the morning of November 13, 1872, at about 7:35 a.m. It was shown in Paris in April 1874 at what became known as the first Impressionist exhibition, and it is credited with giving the movement its name. Monet said that, asked for a catalogue title, he answered: "Put Impression." The painting belongs to the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris. It was stolen in 1985, recovered in 1990 and back on display in 1991, and it travelled to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 2024–25. It measures 48 × 63 cm.
