Regatta at Sainte-Adresse

Claude Monet, 1867

Sailing

Sails fill. A crowd on the jetty. Sainte-Adresse turns a Sunday into a race. The sky does half the work.

About this work

Regatta at Sainte-Adresse is an 1867 oil by Claude Monet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Under a bright, windy sky, white-sailed yachts race across the green water at high tide while well-dressed spectators watch from the curving shingle beach. Sainte-Adresse, a prosperous suburb of Le Havre on the Normandy coast, was where Monet's father lived. The painter, then broke, spent the summer of 1867 there with his father and his aunt Sophie Lecadre, leaving his companion Camille Doncieux in Paris with their newborn son, Jean; he went to Paris for the birth and returned to the coast a few days later. On 25 June he wrote that he was working on about twenty pictures, among them "the regattas of Le Havre with many figures on the beach and the outer harbor covered with small sails." The painting was probably conceived as a pair with The Beach at Sainte-Adresse in the Art Institute of Chicago. The two are the same size and were painted from points only a few yards apart, one showing a sunny regatta and its holiday crowd, the other an overcast low tide with fishing boats and workers. Monet never showed them side by side. The canvas measures 29 5/8 by 40 inches and came to the Met in 1951 with the bequest of William Church Osborn.
