About this work
The French photographer Louis-Émile Durandelle documented the construction of the Eiffel Tower from 1887 to 1889, and this view, dated November 23, 1888, shows it about four months short of completion. The tower was built for the 1889 exposition in Paris, organised by the French government to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution. Gustave Eiffel's design, 300 metres of open-lattice wrought iron, was chosen in a competition for a monument at the exposition, and at twice the height of the dome of St Peter's in Rome or the Great Pyramid of Giza, nothing like it had been built before. Durandelle was an architectural photographer best known for his records of Parisian building projects, including the Paris Opéra with Charles Garnier. After the death of his wife in 1890 he sold the business and its negatives. The print belongs to the Getty, which released the image through its Open Content Program.
