Pillars of Creation, Webb
NASA / ESA / CSA / STScI, 2022
Stars being born inside a cloud that is already coming apart. Tall as a war. The pillars look like a coast you could walk. You could not. We may be seeing them after they are already gone.
About this work
In October 2022 the James Webb Space Telescope photographed the Pillars of Creation with its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). The pillars are columns of gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, in the constellation Serpens, some 6,500–7,000 light-years from Earth; Hubble made them famous in 1995 and photographed them again in 2014. Infrared light passes through much of the dust that hides the scene in visible light, so Webb's view is semi-transparent: the release describes pillars that "look like arches and spires rising out of a desert landscape" but are filled with gas and dust and constantly changing. Newly formed stars are the scene-stealers in the image; this is a region where young stars are forming or have barely burst from their dusty cocoons. The image was processed at the Space Telescope Science Institute by Joseph DePasquale, Anton M. Koekemoer and Alyssa Pagan for NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency. Webb was launched in December 2021, and the image was unveiled in October 2022.
