Stephan's Quintet

Five galaxies crowded together, and one of them is only passing through. Tails of stars ripped loose. The crash is still happening. Too slow for anyone to shout.

About this work

This mosaic of Stephan's Quintet was one of the first images released from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, on July 12, 2022, and it was Webb's largest image up to then. It covers about a fifth of the Moon's diameter, contains more than 150 million pixels, and was built from almost 1,000 separate image files from Webb's Near-Infrared Camera and Mid-Infrared Instrument. The quintet is a visual grouping of five galaxies in the constellation Pegasus, discovered by Édouard Stephan at the Marseille Observatory in 1877. Four of them form a true group, the first compact galaxy group ever found; the fifth and brightest, NGC 7320, is much closer to us and only lines up by chance. Webb shows clusters of millions of young stars, regions of fresh star birth, and long tails of gas, dust and stars pulled from the galaxies by their gravity. Its mid-infrared data also capture huge shock waves as one galaxy, NGC 7318B, smashes through the group; these are shown in red and gold. The image is credited to NASA, ESA, CSA and STScI.

FAQ

Where can I buy a framed print of Stephan's Quintet?

Here. Stephan's Quintet is available as a framed print in three sizes: Small (20 × 19 in) for $100, Medium (24 × 23 in) for $150 and Large (36 × 35 in) for $300. Prices include the frame and US shipping; delivery takes 14–21 days, with 30-day returns.

What size works best for Stephan's Quintet?

The file is 12,654 × 12,132 px, so every size is sharp: even Large (36 × 35 in) prints at 347 ppi. Choose Large (36 × 35 in) for a large wall; Small (20 × 19 in) suits a narrower space.

Is it legal to print Stephan's Quintet?

Yes. The image was released by NASA, ESA, the Canadian Space Agency and the Space Telescope Science Institute.
