The star has already let go. The ring is what letting go looks like. A death that takes thousands of years and still fits in a frame. The shape is doing the mourning.

About this work

The Southern Ring Nebula, also known as NGC 3132 or the Eight-Burst Nebula, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vela: the expanding shells of gas thrown off by a dying star. NASA puts it about 2,500 light-years away. The James Webb Space Telescope's view was one of the five first official science images released on July 12, 2022, and it was captured with two of Webb's cameras. Two stars sit close together near the centre. The fainter of them is the central star, a white dwarf with a temperature of about 140,000 K, which has blown off its outer layers and makes the surrounding nebula glow with its intense ultraviolet radiation. Around it a low-density central cavity is surrounded by multiple ring-like structures of gas and dust. Planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets; the name comes from their round appearance in early telescopes.
