Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba

Claude Lorrain, 1648

Roman Empire

Claude's classical seaport under gold air — embarkation, architecture, and luminous calm.

About this work

Claude Lorrain signed and dated Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba in 1648. It was commissioned by the Duc de Bouillon, general of the papal army, as a pair with Claude's Landscape with the Marriage of Isaac and Rebecca. The subject comes from the First Book of Kings: the Queen of Sheba setting out to visit King Solomon in Jerusalem. Their meeting would have been the usual subject; Claude chose her departure, which let him paint one of his many harbour scenes. The early-morning sun lights the sea between classical buildings as ships are loaded. The Queen, in a pink tunic, royal blue cloak and gold crown, stands on the steps at right about to board a launch, where the line of the steps meets the column of a portico. The painting was among the first works acquired by the National Gallery in London, bought in 1824 from the collection of John Julius Angerstein, and it is catalogued as NG14. It inspired J. M. W. Turner's Dido Building Carthage, which Turner left to the nation on condition that it hang beside Claude's pair. It is number 114 in Claude's own record of his work, the Liber Veritatis.
