About this work

Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Elder painted The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, Die Hermannsschlacht im Teutoburger Wald, around 1840. Arminius, the Germanic leader known in German as Hermann, rides a white horse at the centre with his sword raised, as his warriors overwhelm the Roman legionaries and the dead lie in the foreground. The battle was fought over four days in September of AD 9, possibly near modern Kalkriese in northern Germany. Arminius, a chieftain who had received Roman citizenship and a Roman military education while serving as an officer in the auxiliary forces of the governor Publius Quinctilius Varus, led an alliance of Germanic peoples in an ambush on three Roman legions strung out along a forest march. The legions were destroyed; Varus took his own life, and Roman losses are estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 dead. Suetonius reports that the emperor Augustus beat his head against the palace walls, crying "Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!" In the 19th century the battle became part of the mythology of German nationalism. Lindenschmit (1806–1848), from Mainz, trained in Munich and Vienna. The painting belongs to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.
