Hats off. Glasses up. Lunch that will not end.
About this work
Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted Luncheon of the Boating Party in 1880–81. It shows a group of his friends relaxing on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise restaurant beside the Seine at Chatou, combining figures, still life and landscape in one canvas. The painter and collector Gustave Caillebotte sits at lower right; Aline Charigot, the seamstress Renoir married in 1890, plays with a small affenpinscher in the foreground; the collector and editor Charles Ephrussi appears at the back in a top hat; and the proprietor's daughter, Louise-Alphonsine Fournaise, leans on the railing near her brother Alphonse, who ran the boat rental. The diagonal of the railing splits the picture into a crowded half and an almost empty one, and light from the large opening in the balcony bounces off the white singlets and the tablecloth. The painting is thought to show the influence of Veronese's Wedding Feast at Cana in the Louvre. It was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882, bought by Paul Durand-Ruel, and purchased from his son in 1923 by Duncan Phillips for $125,000. It hangs in The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
