Starrucca Viaduct, Pennsylvania
Jasper Francis Cropsey, 1865
A stone viaduct, a train, a valley that used to be only river. The new America, without apology. The bridge wins. The hills allow it.
About this work
Starrucca Viaduct, Pennsylvania is an 1865 oil by Jasper Francis Cropsey in the Toledo Museum of Art. It shows a real bridge: the stone viaduct that carries the railway over Starrucca Creek near Lanesboro, Pennsylvania. Designed by Julius W. Adams and James P. Kirkwood and built in 1847–48 by the New York and Erie Railroad from locally quarried bluestone, it was then the largest stone railway viaduct in the world. It is still in use and is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Cropsey, who had returned from seven years in London and specialised in vivid autumn scenes of the northeast, paints the valley from a hillside in full fall color, with a figure looking down over the river toward the arches and a train crossing. The museum's label notes that images of the railroad could stand for progress or for the destruction of nature, but that Cropsey took an idealistic view: the train and trestle blend into the landscape, and the engine's white smoke echoes the clouds above. The canvas measures 22 3/8 by 36 3/8 inches and was bought with funds from the Florence Scott Libbey Bequest.
