The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh, 1889
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, from memory of the view east of his window before sunrise. Swirling skies, a crescent moon and eleven stars roll above a quiet village, with a flame-like cypress in the foreground. The canvas has been in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, since 1941.
