About this work
Santa Maria della Salute is an oil painted around 1770 by Francesco Guardi, now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The domed church rises across the water at the mouth of the Grand Canal, with gondolas, sailing boats and small figures scattered across the lagoon in the foreground. The Salute was Venice's thank-offering for deliverance from the devastating plague of 1630. The Republic vowed to build a church to Our Lady of Health, chose a Baroque design by Baldassare Longhena, began construction in 1631 and finished in 1681; its dome became one of the landmarks of the Venetian skyline. Guardi, born in Venice in 1712, worked for years with his brother Gian Antonio, mostly on religious pictures, and turned to views of the city after his brother's death in 1760. His early vedute show the influence of Canaletto, but he moved toward the looser style seen here, with quick, spirited brushwork and freely treated architecture. The small canvas, 32.4 by 52.7 cm, passed through the Paris dealer Théodore Bonjean and Knoedler in New York before William A. Clark bought it in 1922. He bequeathed it to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1926, and it came to the National Gallery in 2015.
