About this work

St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna (Der Stephansdom in Wien) is an 1832 oil on canvas by Rudolf von Alt, now in the Belvedere in Vienna. The Gothic cathedral fills the view from the Stephansplatz, its patterned tile roof and great south tower rising above a square crowded with people, carriages and market stalls. The painter signed and dated it at lower center, "Rudolph Alt 1832." Alt was only about twenty. Born in Vienna in 1812, the son of the lithographer Jakob Alt, he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and went on to a long career as a landscape and architectural painter, working above all in detailed watercolors; he was knighted in 1889 and lived to 1905. Its collection history records that the canvas was bought from the 1832 Academy exhibition for the imperial picture gallery. St Stephen's is the most important religious building in Vienna. Its present Romanesque and Gothic form was largely begun under Duke Rudolf IV in the fourteenth century, and the south tower, 136 meters tall and nicknamed "Steffl" by the Viennese, took sixty-five years to build. The painting measures 46 by 57.5 cm and is inventory number 2081 at the Belvedere.
