Boreas Capturing the French Frigate Serene
Thomas Whitcombe, c. 1808
Thomas Whitcombe painted the English frigate Boreas taking the French frigate Serene, around 1808. The picture is unusual because both ships fight while carrying their full sail, studding sails included. It was hard to man the guns and set every sail at once, so the scene suggests a chase.
