About this work

Autumn – On the Hudson River is a canvas by Jasper Francis Cropsey nearly nine feet wide that he finished in London in 1860. Cropsey, born on Staten Island in 1823, had moved to England in 1856, and the National Gallery of Art says he painted this view of the Hudson Valley from memory in his London studio. He chose a high vantage point looking southeast toward the distant river and the flank of Storm King Mountain. In the foreground three hunters and their dogs gaze into the sunlight; along the winding stream are a log cabin, grazing sheep, children on a bridge and cows standing in the water. A critic in 1860 called the picture "not the solemn wasting away of the year, but its joyful crowning festival." British viewers, used to far duller autumns, were astonished by the color, and Cropsey displayed real North American leaves beside the painting to persuade sceptics that it was accurate. It was bought in 1862 by Thomas Slattery of London for $2,000, the largest sum Cropsey had earned for a single work, and shown at that year's International Exhibition. The National Gallery of Art in Washington acquired it in 1963.
