Thomas Doughty, 1827
Thomas Doughty, one of the first American painters to work purely as a landscapist, painted the Delaware Water Gap in 1827. The gap is where the Delaware River cuts through the mountains between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The painting is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
