George Peter Alexander Healy, 1869
Healy's Lincoln — the wartime president, monumental and grave.
About this work
George Peter Alexander Healy painted this portrait of Abraham Lincoln in 1869, four years after Lincoln's assassination, and the year after his group portrait The Peacemakers. Healy (1813–1894) was born in Boston, the eldest son of an Irish merchant-marine captain, and began drawing at sixteen, helped by Gilbert Stuart's daughter Jane and advised by the painter Thomas Sully. He became one of the most prolific and popular portraitists of his time, with studios in Paris and Chicago, and painted a series of presidents from John Quincy Adams to Ulysses S. Grant for the Corcoran Gallery in Washington. Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States, from 1861 until his death in April 1865. Born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky and largely self-educated, he led the country through the Civil War. On January 1, 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and on November 19 that year he gave the Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous speeches in American history. He promoted the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery in 1865.
