Gilbert Stuart, 1796

Great Men

The Lansdowne Washington — orator's hand, sword, and republican gravity.

About this work

Gilbert Stuart's Lansdowne portrait shows George Washington life-size at 64, in his final year as president. He stands in a plain black velvet suit with a sword at his side and one arm extended, as if addressing Congress; the scene probably, and fancifully, refers to his annual address of December 7, 1795, which followed the bitter fight over the Jay Treaty. The original was a gift to the former British prime minister William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, and spent more than 170 years in England before the National Portrait Gallery in Washington bought it in 2001 for $20 million, preventing its sale at auction. Stuart also painted three replicas and five closely related portraits. The best known has hung in the East Room of the White House since 1800, and was saved from the burning of Washington on August 24, 1814, by Dolley Madison, George Washington Parke Custis, Paul Jennings, Jean-Pierre Sioussat and Thomas McGrath. Other replicas are at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Brooklyn Museum.

Yes. George Washington (Lansdowne Portrait) is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
