About this work
The Cathedral of Seville (De kathedraal van Sevilla) is an 1843 painting by the Belgian artist François Antoine Bossuet, now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA, inventory 1751). A sunlit street leads past the flank of the vast Gothic cathedral to the Giralda, the bell tower that rises above the city, with townspeople and travellers in the foreground and a domed building in the distance. Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. When it was completed in the early sixteenth century it overtook Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral of all, a title the Byzantine church had held for a thousand years. The Giralda, a former minaret converted into a bell tower, reaches 104.5 metres to its weathervane and is a symbol of the city. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Alcázar and the Archive of the Indies. Bossuet, born in Ypres in 1798, trained at the Antwerp academy and taught at the Brussels academy from 1835 to 1876. He travelled widely in Europe, specialised in city views and architecture, and in 1843, the year of this picture, published a treatise on perspective. The canvas measures 71 by 95.5 cm.
