Kanbara: Night Snow
Utagawa Hiroshige, c. 1833–34
From the Hōeidō edition of Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published around 1833–34. Three figures make their way through deep snow past the houses of Kanbara, a station on the highway between Edo and Kyoto. Kanbara was not known for snow, and the scene is often read as the artist's invention. This impression is in the Library of Congress.
