The Great Wave off Kanagawa
Katsushika Hokusai, c. 1830–32
Katsushika Hokusai designed Under the Wave off Kanagawa, better known as The Great Wave, around 1830–32 for his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. A towering wave curls over three boats of rowers off the coast of Kanagawa, with Mount Fuji small and snow-capped in the distance. This color woodblock impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (H. O. Havemeyer Collection).
