View on the Catskill, Early Autumn
Thomas Cole, 1837
About this work
Thomas Cole painted View on the Catskill—Early Autumn in 1836–37. Catskill Creek, a tributary of the Hudson near Cole's home in the village of Catskill, was a subject he returned to again and again; he painted it at least ten times. This view shows the creek winding through a peaceful valley in early autumn, with trees framing the foreground and the Catskill Mountains in the distance. In reality the creek was then a centre of rapid industrial development, lined with mills, tanneries and iron works, and in 1836 work began on the Canajoharie and Catskill Railroad. In an 1837 letter to his patron Jonathan Sturges, Cole lamented the destruction of his "favourite haunt" as trees were felled for the line. In the painting he chose to show harmony between people and nature instead: a house with a smoking chimney, a wooden fence and axe-cut stumps are the only signs of human presence. Sturges commissioned the painting, and his children gave it to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in his memory in 1895. It measures 39 × 63 inches.
