Among the Sierra Nevada, California
Albert Bierstadt, 1868
A still lake. A few deer. Water falling out of a cloud. The Sierra holds the rest. Nothing happens. That is enough.
About this work
Among the Sierra Nevada, California is an 1868 painting by the German-American artist Albert Bierstadt. Rugged mountains rise on the left and in the distance under a bright sky, with the sun breaking through clouds; below, a calm lake with elk and waterfowl at its edge is bordered by trees on the right. Bierstadt, who was born in Germany, raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and trained at the Düsseldorf Academy, travelled west with Frederick W. Lander's survey expedition in 1859 and made several later trips to paint California, in part to attract visitors and investors. He may have seen the scene on a journey to the Sierra Nevada in 1863, but he painted the picture in his studio in Rome in the winter of 1867–68, and it was exhibited in Europe, where it stirred interest in emigrating to the United States. It measures 183 × 305 cm (72 × 120⅛ in), in a frame about 244 × 367 cm, and is a centrepiece of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's nineteenth-century landscapes.
