Heraclius and the True Cross
Adam Elsheimer, 1603–05
This panel also comes from Adam Elsheimer's Frankfurt altarpiece of the Exaltation of the True Cross, painted between 1603 and 1605. It belongs to the scenes of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and the Cross he recovered from the Persians. Elsheimer worked in Rome and painted on small copper and wood panels with jewel-like detail.
