Adam Elsheimer painted this panel as part of his Frankfurt altarpiece of the Exaltation of the True Cross between 1603 and 1605. It shows the Byzantine emperor Heraclius bringing the Cross back to Jerusalem after recovering it from the Persians. The altarpiece panels are in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
