Emanuel Leutze, 1851

Great Men

Leutze's Met epic — Washington standing in the boat through ice and dawn.

About this work

Emanuel Leutze's painting shows George Washington crossing the Delaware River with the Continental Army on the night of December 25–26, 1776, the covert move that led to the surprise victory over Hessian forces at Trenton the next morning. Leutze grew up in America and returned to Germany as an adult. He conceived the picture during the revolutions of 1848, hoping the American example would encourage Europe's liberal reformers, and used American tourists and art students, among them Worthington Whittredge, as models and assistants. His first version was damaged by fire in the studio, restored, acquired by the Kunsthalle Bremen and destroyed in a British bombing raid in 1942. This is the second, a full-size replica first exhibited in New York in October 1851, where more than 50,000 people came to see it. Marshall O. Roberts bought it for $10,000, and after several owners John Stewart Kennedy gave it to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1897. The canvas is enormous: 378.5 × 647.7 cm (149 × 255 in).
