About this work
View of Bentheim Castle is an oil on panel painted around 1652–54 by Jacob van Ruisdael, now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. The castle crowns a wooded hill under a high, cloudy sky, and we look up at it from rough ground below, past dark trees and boulders. Bentheim Castle, first mentioned in the eleventh century, stands on a hill in Bad Bentheim in Lower Saxony, just over the German border from the Netherlands. Ruisdael, born in Haarlem around 1628–29 into a family of landscape painters and generally considered the pre-eminent landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, visited it in the summer of 1650. According to the Mauritshuis it made a deep impression on him, and he painted it again and again in the following years. The museum notes that his landscapes often have a monumental air, achieved here by making us look up at the castle from below, and says Ruisdael was the first to use this device. The panel, 51.9 by 67.7 cm and signed "JvRuisdael" at lower left, belonged to Edward Strutt, 1st Baron Belper, by 1880. The Mauritshuis bought it in 2005 with support from the Dutch state, the Rembrandt Association and other funders.

Yes. Bentheim Castle is in the public domain: its copyright, if it ever had one, expired long ago. In the United States a faithful photograph of a public-domain painting does not create a new copyright (Bridgeman v. Corel, 1999), so the image can be printed and sold freely.
