About this work

This 1857 view by the Sevillian painter Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer looks out from inside the Alhambra in Granada. Through a pair of slender arches framed by richly carved decoration, the evening sky glows pink and blue above distant hills. It is a work on paper in pen, watercolor, gouache and black chalk, about 60 by 42 cm, signed and dated at lower right "Joaqu. D. Becquer Granada 1857," and was sold by Koller Auctions in Zurich. The Alhambra was begun in 1238 by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, founder of the Emirate of Granada, the last Muslim state of al-Andalus, on the Sabika hill. Its palaces took much of their defining character in the fourteenth century under Yusuf I and Muhammad V, and the site is one of the most celebrated monuments of the medieval Islamic world. Bécquer, born in Seville in 1817, studied and later taught at the city's Academy of Fine Arts. He directed the artistic work for Queen Isabella II's restoration of the Alcázar of Seville, which earned him the honorary title of Court Painter, and he was known above all for Costumbrista scenes of Andalusian life. After his cousin José died in 1841 he became guardian of José's son Valeriano Bécquer, who also became a painter.
