A three-master heels into the swell. A red pennant still flies. Light cuts the storm. Two gulls ride the dark water.
About this work
A Ship on the High Seas Caught by a Squall, known as The Gust, is an oil painted around 1680 by Willem van de Velde the Younger, now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum describes the ship as a large, 70-gun British warship in distress: a fierce gust has broken one of its masts and a sail has torn loose, and the hull heels over on a high wave under a dark storm sky. A smaller vessel struggles on the left. Van de Velde, baptised in Leiden in 1633, was the son of the marine painter Willem van de Velde the Elder and trained with his father and with Simon de Vlieger. In 1672, driven out by the hardships of the Dutch war with France, father and son moved to England and entered the service of Charles II, each at a salary of £100. He painted The Gust and its companion piece, The Cannon Shot, in England. The two pictures show the sea's opposite moods, storm and dead calm, and remained together in the collection of Sir Philip Stephens in the eighteenth century; both are now in the Rijksmuseum. The canvas is 77 by 63.5 cm.
