The Senate has emptied after the Ides of March. Three slaves lift Caesar's body from the floor at the foot of Pompey's statue, with blood still on the plinth.

About this work

The Death of Julius Caesar (La morte di Giulio Cesare) is a painting by the Italian artist Michele Marcucci, dated to about 1880–85 and displayed in the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi in Lucca. It shows the assassination of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March, 15 March 44 BC, during a meeting of the Senate in the Curia of Pompey, part of the Theatre of Pompey in Rome. The conspirators, numbering about sixty and led by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus and Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus, stabbed Caesar around 23 times. They claimed to be defending the Roman Republic against a man who had made himself dictator for life. The killing did not restore the Republic: it led to Caesar's deification and to the Liberators' civil war of 43–42 BC, a stage in the collapse of the Republic that ended with the rise of the Roman Empire under Augustus. Our image is a photograph of the painting taken in the museum in 2022 and shared on Wikimedia Commons.
